In-Depth Technical Guide

How GST Calculation Works

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) calculation depends on whether the tax is already included in the price or needs to be added to the base price.

1. Exclusive GST (Adding GST)

When the price given does not include GST, you must add the tax to find the total cost.

  • GST Amount = Base Amount × (GST Rate / 100)
  • Total Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount

2. Inclusive GST (Extracting GST)

When the price already includes GST, you can extract the tax amount and find the original base price.

  • GST Amount = Total Amount - (Total Amount × (100 / (100 + GST Rate)))
  • Base Amount = Total Amount - GST Amount

Using our calculator prevents manual errors and ensures precise financial tracking for invoices and tax filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Inclusive and Exclusive GST?

How do I extract GST from a total amount?
Select "Inclusive GST", enter the total amount and the GST rate. The calculator will automatically show you the GST amount that was included and the original base price before tax.
Is this calculator suitable for any country?
Yes! Since you can manually input the GST rate percentage, this calculator can be used for any country that implements a percentage-based Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Value Added Tax (VAT).
